School of Rock

I was jonesing for a movie. Jonesing bad. So I caught the last bargain mat of School of Rock after work today.

On the surface, it's one of those Bad News Bears meets Dead Poet's Society things where everyone realises they have a special talent and everyone learns a valuable lesson. But oh...it's more than that.
Jack Black makes it magic. He's Dewey, a loser rocker who gets kicked out of his own band, takes his roommate's job, and pretends to be a substitute teacher. The kids are multiethnic and oh-so-articulate. And it's a Macriffic movie, too...one Titanium PowerBook and lots of the new iMacs...but, oddly, no iPods...

But the scene where Dewey realises the kids have musical talent and decides to actually teach them rock and roll...that's great. Just...great.
It's clever. It's witty. It's actually cheerful, too, which has got to be a first for Mike White, who's responsible for both Chuck & Buck and The Good Girl. When I found out he wrote it, I was a little scared...but really, it's okay. No worries. Joan Cusak, too...she's lovely in this.

The chalkboard flowchart on the history of Rock n' Roll is something I wish I had a poster of. It's brilliant.
