Spirited Away is spellbinding. It's the most impressive work of art I've seen in animation, and it's about two hours long. Most animated films never seem to last more than 80 minutes. The detail is astounding (especially the little details of Japanese life, and the food! Oh, the food!) The story is enthralling. It so utterly and completely deserved its Oscar; I wonder if it would have been nominated for Best Picture if they didn't have the Animated category. Yes, it's that good. Don't think of it as anime. Think of it as a hell of a ride, and go see it.
This world is not such a terrible place when deserving and important films like Spirited Away and Bowling for Columbine are nominated for and actually win their Oscars for being the best in their categories. Because they are, and they should win is often no guarantee. 2002 was a huge year for the art of filmmaking. Wish I'd realised it while it was happening.
