|40+ Abyssinians Seized in Newport RI

I am posting this everywhere else, might as well post it in my own journal...
This just...ARRRRRGH!!! I've been to Newport. Dave lived there for 15 years. It's like Carmel, all fancy houses and rich people, which makes this all the more disgusting.
And it's Abyssinians. Any other type of cat would be bad enough, but Abys? I just imagine 48 Angels.
"I thought you would be interested to know that the Potter League for Animals removed 48 Abyssinians from a cat breeder in Newport, Chickwick Abyssinians, from her house. They also removed a corn snake, one dog, a turtle and two other household cats. She now has no animals. This situation was discovered because there was a fire in her home and when the fire department came they discovered such filth that all these cats were living in. I I looked at her website and it is a pretty nice website, you would NEVER think that she had terribly sick cats and kittens. The Potter League has most of them presently, they have other rescue groups coming in and believe it or not only one had to be put to sleep because its eye was not in the head and one did die at The Potter League. According to one woman from Potter's she is a greedy woman and only cares about selling her kittens. She lives on one of the most beautiful locations in Newport, you would never think this woman would live in these conditions."
If you're interested in helping to rescue one or more of these Abys, please contact the Potter League for Animals (Newport, RI), 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown RI 02842
Tell all your friends. Especially if they've ever wanted an Abyssinian.
That's so horribly sad! We think our little mixed breed DSH might be part Aby and she's such a lovely kitty. If you get any more info, please pass it on? I don't know anyone who is looking for a cat at the moment but I'll spread the word just in case...
I will. This is all I have at the moment...
Exactly what I was thinking...and for me, these are so close! It's only about an hour-hour and a half drive to Newport from here...
Just keep repeating to yourself "I have enough cats. I am not the crazy cat lady."
i know a few people in New England (a few in Mass, a few in Maine, one in Connecticut) who might want to know or could help boost the signal...when you get more info, send it along?
Absolutely. I haven't heard anything new (apart from the breeder's home address), but when I do I'll post here and also on gun_hee
I'd love more info as well. The rescue doesn't have them listed anywhere.
I suspect that's because the Abys they have aren't healthy enough for adoption. You may need to call them or email them. I haven't heard anything new today (apart from the breeder's home address), but when I do I'll post here and also on gun_hee
That's scary when the breeders have a somewhat decent looking website, too. There are 4 Cornish Rex breeders in my state, one just popped up and has an e-mail but no website, so I passed over them and took a look at the others' sites. The one I decided to contact has tons of detail on her site about how the cats are raised and cared for, with pics, but the clincher for me was that she expects all her adopters to come to her cattery and meet her/the cats. One of the others had a very slick and professional looking site, but there was no detailed info about her cattery or cats--just a page about how she always had kittens and retired adults available, to call or e-mail her and that she could ship anywhere. Um, no.
It's funny, the breeder I got Jake and Gun-Hee from hasn't updated her website since 2006. I know why, she's focusing on her cats and her local cat club and on getting shows in her area (she's in the Maritimes, and breeders there have to travel a lot to get to enough shows to Grand their cats), so while I find it frustrating at times, I almost trust breeders with small websites more. If they have the time (or the money) to have a big fancy one, I get suspicious that it's at the cost of the cats.
Yeah, Sally (rex breeder) doesn't update her photos and basic pages a whole lot, but she keeps her kittens/available page updated regularly. The site is www.owhl.com, if you look at the Cornish Rex page, 'Teeters' is one I'm hoping to adopt.
Aw! She's adorable...though, I think I'd call her "Trixie" rather than Teeters
(Angel is the only adult cat I didn't rename...Tessie was Butterfly, Patrick was Twinkie, Sigrid was Sugar...yeah.)
LOL I saw the Folds and immediately wanted her to breed Folded Rexes :-)
