On about half of those emails I mentioned the other day is an email address to contact to stop the spamness: info@tententwelve.com. It doesn't work; I gave it a shot and, as expected, got a bounceback. However, there's also a phone number given to call to stop the spam: 310-598-7434.

So of course I called it.

After several rings, a very sleepy Frenchman answered. "Hello?" he said groggily.

"Hello," I said. "I got this number on an email as a number to call to stop getting spam. So I would like to stop getting these emails from you."

"..." he said. "What?"

"This number was on an email to call to stop getting junk emails."

"I dunno what you are talkin' abou'," he said. Once again, I said, "This number, 310-598-7454, was on a bunch of emails I've been getting. It's supposed to be the number to stop the emails."

"I don'...lemme tell you somethin'. This is my cell phone. What you name?"

"My name is Coco," I said, as if that made a difference."

"Okay, an' you callin' me from a blocked number?"

"I'm calling you from a public number; I don't know if it's blocked or not," I said.

"Righ'...okay lemme tell you somethin'. I was sleeping. You already call --"

"No," I said. "This is the very first time I've called. I tried emailing, but the email address wasn't any good. That's why I'm calling you."

"Okay," he said. "Lemme tell you somethin', because it's funny, you know: a woman jus' call me, at the same time. She's saying to stop emailing her,"

"Right," I interrupted him. "I told you: your number is on these emails to stop them being sent. You're going to get a lot more calls."

"Okay, I don' know bout that," he said. "I was a sleepin'. You call me again, I'm call the police."

"Fine," I agreed. "You send me any more email, and I'll call the police. How about that?"

And then we pretty much hung up on each other.

But if you're bored and want to heckle a spammer (or an affilliate of a spammer, or perhaps an innocent victim, though I doubt it), you can always call 310-598-7434.
