I'm sure you've all heard about the cat food recalls and the poor cats who have died from renal failure after eating the affected brands. I checked the shelves, and, luckily we only had one can of Eukanuba Kitten that was on the list, and it had a different date code (still, out it goes). We mainly feed the cats Pro Plan and Fancy Feast (which seem to be immune, at least so far), but since there are so few kitten flavours in each brand, I get Gun-Hee cans across brands. Which is a little scary, since that means he was potentially the one most at risk.

We also don't feed cans very often, mainly as a treat, so that, too, worked in our favour.

But this morning on one of my cat lists, I read that Science Diet is recalling some of its cat food.

And...whoa. I just looked at the shelf...and while I'd managed to pretty much avoid all the other brands, I had Science Diet Kitten Savory Cuts Ocean Fish...the date code is different, but still, better safe than sorry.

Because Science Diet wan't on the "main" list of cat food recalls, and I kind of saw it almost by accident...yeah. Scary.

I need to go hug my kitties now.

Kitty Food Recall

Yeah - we had *just* bought some Science Diet Hairball control - 3 sample cans - and I saw something about this Saturday morning as we were getting ready to go to Summits Coronet. I raced to the shelves to check the remaining can - I could remember the other 2 and they weren't the listed types, but I wasn't sure about this last one. fortunately, it wasn't on the list *and* the date code was months earlier.

But I also have engaged in a lot of extra kitty cuddling the past few days. Not like they mind. The Persian has suddenly rediscovered "lap time".

It's absolutely horrifying, especially because it's so wide-spread. I felt a really disgusted twinge at the seemingly-innocuous comment someone on the train made:

"At least it was mostly the cheap store-brand knock-offs instead of the 'real' cat food. I mean, who buys that stuff anyway?"

... and I was thinking that it's probably people who simply can't afford the better stuff. I was imagining some poor elderly lady with her cat and all she can get is the WalMart brand of cat food, or the kid who doesn't have a lot of money but whose mom wanted to make sure he had a pet. Are these cats (and dogs) any less deserving of life, loving, and the pursuit of the perfectly sunny spot?

But see, it wasn't, either...it was Iams and Eukanuba and Science Diet, which are the "real" cat food.

Plus, Harri, he prefered plain ol' Friskies to any of them; I think as he got older, he liked it better because it has a stronger smell. So sometimes, you buy what the cat wants to eat, whether or not it's the "good" stuff.

I cant even begin to say how terribly worried I am for all of my American and Canadian friends and their cats and dogs. I would just feel so paranoid every time I fed the cats. I hope Menu Foods get their arses sued right off.

Luckily, we don't feed a lot of canned food. But...yeah.

Probably Stonestown. It was in SF, and I don't remember there being one on Market when I was living there.

Dusty's one of those that prefers the regular, blah, friskies.. so i'm thankful that wasn't on the list. Part of me is tempted to just make him chicken straight up, and avoid canned foods alltogether.. i would give it up but he doesn't like dry food as much as wet.
