On about half of those emails I mentioned the other day is an email address to contact to stop the spamness: info@tententwelve.com. It doesn't work; I gave it a shot and, as expected, got a bounceback. However, there's also a phone number given to call to stop the spam: 310-598-7434.

So of course I called it.

After several rings, a very sleepy Frenchman answered. "Hello?" he said groggily.

"Hello," I said. "I got this number on an email as a number to call to stop getting spam. So I would like to stop getting these emails from you."

"..." he said. "What?"

"This number was on an email to call to stop getting junk emails."

"I dunno what you are talkin' abou'," he said. Once again, I said, "This number, 310-598-7454, was on a bunch of emails I've been getting. It's supposed to be the number to stop the emails."

"I don'...lemme tell you somethin'. This is my cell phone. What you name?"

"My name is Coco," I said, as if that made a difference."

"Okay, an' you callin' me from a blocked number?"

"I'm calling you from a public number; I don't know if it's blocked or not," I said.

"Righ'...okay lemme tell you somethin'. I was sleeping. You already call --"

"No," I said. "This is the very first time I've called. I tried emailing, but the email address wasn't any good. That's why I'm calling you."

"Okay," he said. "Lemme tell you somethin', because it's funny, you know: a woman jus' call me, at the same time. She's saying to stop emailing her,"

"Right," I interrupted him. "I told you: your number is on these emails to stop them being sent. You're going to get a lot more calls."

"Okay, I don' know bout that," he said. "I was a sleepin'. You call me again, I'm call the police."

"Fine," I agreed. "You send me any more email, and I'll call the police. How about that?"

And then we pretty much hung up on each other.

But if you're bored and want to heckle a spammer (or an affilliate of a spammer, or perhaps an innocent victim, though I doubt it), you can always call 310-598-7434.

Never, ever email a spammer back. that just confirms that your address is active.

I think that the poor guy is a victim here, too.

Yeah, I never do...in this case, it wasn't exactly "back" - it was to a completely different address than the one it came from, the one it pretended to come from, or the one that it pretended to be a bounceback from.

And they're already sending me 20-30 of these fake returned mails a day; I figured what the hell, try the email...they've either got a pretty good idea I've got an active email, or they don't give a damn.

I'm betting that guy is just someone the original spammer doesn't like.

weirdly, i will tell you that a spanky's copies public phone should come up 805-339-2xxx, VENTURA CA. all the dialouts for, ahem, spanky's copies are still located in that sad building which like three departments in the whole company are left in.

i wonder if he likes having a fax machine set loose on him. remember, customers, you aren't charged for the fax if it doesn't go through...

You mean, like, no matter which spanky's you call from in the country, they all come up 805?

If that's the case, that's actually kind of awesome. Not to mention useful.

310 is a California area code (South L.A./Culver City area) . . . if you called him early in the morning over there, no doubt it was VERY early out in California*.

It was probably somebody who had it in for the poor French guy and wanted to make his life miserable for a while.

*I've been an ex-Californian for only 10 months, and I'm already calling it "out in."
