Florida does it again [Nov. 7th, 2005|08:16 pm]
한국 사람이 아니다
[Current Mood |nauseateddisgusted]

Oh, let's all have a field day with this one, shall we?

A pregnant 13-year-old girl in Florida has been told she cannot have an abortion because she lacks the maturity to make such a decision.

A state court granted an injunction which prevents the girl from terminating her pregnancy.

She is three months pregnant and had planned to have an abortion on Tuesday of this week.

Because, while she's not mature enough to make a responsible decision about her future, she's mature enough to raise a child? Right. This is from the BBC; no wonder the rest of the world thinks we're a pack of bloody looneys.

Ahh my head hurts. This only strengthens my resolve to obliterate this entire state from the face of the planet.

I KNOW.

I mean...she made an appointment for herself. She's more mature than most of the Florida legislature, in my book.

Everything north of Palm Beach is very southern and very um, well, radical-Christian-rightwing-freaky.

When I was in high school I went to a program called Girl State sponsored by the American Legion Auxilliary. We were supposed to form a state (and elect everyone from the governor to the local dog catcher), but what it really was was a Christian Revival of some sort. We had to pray three times a day, and sing Christian hymms. My friend A and I were the only Jews there. It was wild.

Oh, I didn't make myself clear. Two or three girls were chosen from each district in the state. It was a real eye-opener for me and A, both of us having led pretty sheltered lives up until that point.

Scary. That stuff is just terrifying to me.

And, wow...I thought they only let Jewish people into Florida if they were old enough to cash in their 401Ks... :-P

Hehehe. You know, you'd be surprised. There are a lot of transplanted New Yorkers down here now, and they're breeding. Shouldn't be long now.....

But seriously, parts of Miami are very, very Jewish. And well, Boca Raton, of course. But everything north of there starts to get weird.

Bah!

I think thats crazy! Its her body to decide for herself what to do and at 13 she's just as responsible as any teenager.

Ward of the state? Is she in a foster home, where the foster parents are technical guardians, who make the decisions?

Is she in Juvvie, and was raped? Maybe there's a bigger issue, here.

Even though she's a ward of the state, were her parents' rights terminated?

This smacks of someone hearing about the poor child and deciding to turn it into political gain. Oh, wait, this is Florida.

Yeah, we all know no one there would ever DREAM of doing that. -_- Out with the fundies.

Well...Bush is on the skids, and we've got no brain-damaged people on respirators handy at the moment, so...yeah.

It's funny how no one is talking about all the trouble that Jeb-boy is having recovering from Wilma, having cashed in all his hurricane points last year.

Remember after Katrina where Jeb was squaking about how great they were in Florida, and how sucky they were in Louisiana? (Well, he was right about the latter.) Karma's a bitch, Bush Boys.

And now God's in the bathtub, Jeb.

Uh ... you do realize this story was from April, right? The injunction was overturned and the girl did get the abortion. Yes, it sucked that there was even an injunction, but this was taken care of a while ago. FYI.

Oh. No...I didn't realise that. But thanks.

Still, the fact that this stuff is happening in the so-called Technology Age of the 21st Century bears mention, even if it was 7 months ago.
