한국 사람이 아니다

Among the types of movies I like, one of my most favourite is the ones where seemingly random people are revealed to be intricately entwined. Playing By Heart and 12 Conversations About One Thing are two of these sorts of movies I'm rather fond of.

Crash isn't a romantic comedy, but it is a well-written and witty look at an aspect of the human condition...the battle between the instincts of bigotry vs. the training of political correctness. A Hispanic character rear-ended by an Asian, launches into a L-and-R reversed tirade. A Caucasian character is not surprised when a stubborn health insurance adminstrator says her name is "Shaneequa." A Persian man's store is vandalised with 9/11-related grafitti. The tattooed Hispanic man with the shaved head who lives in a dicey neighbourhood is actually the most moral and upright citizen of the bunch.

It's all the things we've thought at some point, and then felt immediately and immeasurably guilty because we thought them.

The cast is varied and engaging. And oddly combined. Brendan Fraser and Sandra Bullock. Don Cheadle. Daniel Dae Kim in an all-too-brief quasi-cameo.

But above all is the dialogue. Deadly and dead-on. You laugh in spite of yourself.

But the best part of all is watching the plots coalesce, the threads braid themselves together, and the relationships between characters reveal themselves.

did you finally go see this?
eh, regardless of timing, this writing is why you do movie reviews
and I just gush over things and insist others follow my example.
