Million Dollar Baby [Feb. 20th, 2005|10:17 pm]
한국 사람이 아니다
[Current Mood |impressedimpressed]
[Current Music |The First 5 Years of SNL (which I watched in realtime)]

At some point about a third of the way into Million Dollar Baby, I said, "This is going to win. This is the Best Picture." It has all the ingredients that a Academy Award winning movie needs to have to win the Oscar, but it's also original (of the five nominees, three are based on historical events and real people), epic, well-acted, tightly drawn, filled with memorable quotes...and, most of all, it's surprising. This picture does what very few movies today manage to do: it surprised me. It ended up about a million miles from where I thought it would. Most reviews and articles are not revealing what happens, and neither will I. It's more about love and human interaction than it is about boxing, though.

It starts in a gym in LA. It ends somewhere between nowhere and goodbye.

It ends somewhere between nowhere and goodbye.

Probably the best explanation. It leaves you with a hole in your heart.

I loved the banter between the priest and Frankie:

Frankie Dunn: So is Jesus a Demigod?
Father Horvak: There are no Demigods you fucking Pagan

Are you comparing the holy trinity to breakfast cereal?

Great dialogue. It's going to take a lot of Oscars home.

Would you call it a chick flick?
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm trying to convince my hubby to see it with me. He will ever manage sit through it if it is.

No, not at all. It's a people drama. No romance, no fluff.

I mean come on...would Clint Eastwood ever make a chick flick? Heh. You can tell your hubby that!

I think he has Eastwood's movies mixed up with Robert Redford's movies. :)

I don't think Dirty Harry would ever stoop to make a chick flick. Why, he'd co-star with a monkey before he'd let that happen.

I was surprised, but underwhelmed. Eastwood and Freeman were so Eastwoood-y and Freeman-y.
