Sideways!? Are you effing KIDDING me? [Jan. 25th, 2005|08:19 am]

The Oscar nominees are out today.

Best Picture is between Finding Neverland, The Aviator, Million Dollar Baby, Ray and...though it makes me gag to have to say it, Sideways.

Sideways. My number one worst movie of 2004. It does just figure, doesn't it? There haven't been so many movies I've actively hated as much as that movie about w(h)ine...so of course it needs to go get a Best Picture nom. Of course. Although, not bad...I have been meaning to see both Ray and Million Dollar Baby, the two I haven't seen yet.

I am kind of pleased that "Accidentally in Love" got a Best Song nomination, sad that they only nominated three movies for Best Animated (when Team America and Polar Express could have easily been tossed in there, too), intrigued that SuperSize Me got nominated for Best Docco but Fahrenheit 9/11 didn't, and impressed that Jamie Foxx got nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor - has that ever happened before?

But Sideways...please. I never thought I'd say it, but I miss the hobbits.

Re: Sideways

True. I just didn't like the story. I don't care about middle aged men who can't grow up and treat women like objects...right down to the mother, who gets gas-station flowers and a card written in the parking lot, and from whom her adult sonsteals money.

I don't care how well-told the story is...

Re: Sideways

Ditto. I'm so tired of stories about men like this. I didn't bother to see the film because of that.

Re: Sideways

I don't think Giamatti's character actually grows, though. I think about all he did was realise that his friend who he used to look up to isn't worth idolising. But then, as someone else commented to me...maybe that's why it's called Sideways, because no progress is actually made.

And he meets a woman who is willing to put up with him. Which part I can identify with, being nearly 40...do you remember an SNL skit with Jon Lovitz wherein he tells women that the secret of dating is to Lower your standards? This movie really reminded me of that silly skit (which was about 10 years ago)!
