Buried treasure [Nov. 13th, 2004|06:56 pm]
한국 사람이 아니다

They've been renovating the South Station T stop since...oh, since I moved here in 2000. It's starting to show some actual promise, and it looks to be shaping up into an attractive, well-lit place. In the course of work, they've stripped off the old wall coverings, and partially uncovered the beautiful mosaic above. I think it says "South Station Under," which makes sense...There's also a mosaic still left in Government Center Station that says "Scollay Under."

I hope this South Station mosaic gets restored and preserved. When they modernised Broadway station, they saved one of those old mosaics and actually framed it with new wall material.

New York's subway system is well known for its handcrafted mosaics, and the first time I visted NYC, in 1996, I was lucky enough to see an exhibit on the history and artistry of the mosaics at the New York Transit Museum. It would be nice if Boston, with the first subway in the US, could hang on to a bit of its history as well...

That first link, I was delighted to find, has some "in-progress" photos that are fairly up-to-date...

I need to send this photo to that second linked site though; they don't seem to have one yet.
